Finding My Why: The Real Reason I Want to Lose Weight

By Tony – Unapologetic Coaching Client

I’m like a lot of people who have struggled with their weight. I’ve tried countless “fad diets” and weight loss programs with little to no success. The weight always came back—fast and with a vengeance.

When I first started working with Coach Tiffany, I did lose weight. I was successful in that part of the journey. But I didn’t fully use the tools and guidance she gave me during our first two years together.

One of the biggest things we talked about—over and over—is how important it is to identify your “why.”

Why do I want to lose weight? Why do I want to change my habits? Why do I want to live differently?

I’ve learned (and still struggle with) figuring out what my “why” really is—and more than that, believing it’s valid.

Let me explain.

I’ve been married almost 20 years and have two amazing kids. According to my doctor, I’m classified as morbidly obese. But my bloodwork looks great, and other than some daily aches and pains, I’m pretty healthy overall.

I have a brother, a sister, nieces, nephews, and—hopefully someday—grandchildren. My wife and I have a whole list of places we want to travel and things we want to do together.

You’d think all those reasons would be enough to keep me on track. I told myself they should be. But when my addiction kicked in—when binge eating would take over—those reasons disappeared. They didn’t feel like enough.

And I’d end up asking myself: “What’s wrong with me?”

It’s not easy to admit this. It feels selfish, especially since I have such a great family and life.

But here’s the truth:

My real “why” is that I hate how I look and feel. More specifically—I want to look better.

That might sound selfish. But working with Coach Tiffany taught me something powerful:

👉 Your “why” doesn’t have to be deep, noble, or make sense to anyone else. It just has to be true for you.

If you don’t have a “why” that hits home, you don’t have an anchor. When things get tough, when the cravings hit, when motivation drops—you need something real to hold onto.

For me, that something is appearance. Because when I look better, I feel better. I carry myself differently. I show up more confidently in my life.

Deion Sanders said it best:

“If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good. If you play good, they pay good.”

That quote resonates with me. And I remind myself of it every day.

Whatever your “why” is—own it. Use it to push through the hard days and remind yourself of your goals.

And most importantly?

Keep on keepin’ on.
